Ed Sheeran: It is devastating to be accused of stealing someone else’s song when we put so much work into our livelihoods
Musician Ed Sheeran delved into the emotional toll of the trial, explaining that because he had to be in New York, it meant missing being with his family for his grandmother’s funeral in Ireland.
“I will never get that time back,” he said.
“I am just a guy with a guitar who loves writing music for people to enjoy,” he said. “I am not and will never allow myself to be a piggy bank for anyone to shake.”
He said like other artists he works hard to create songs “based around real-life personal experience.”

After hearing the verdict of the jury that found no wrongful copying in Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On,” musician Sheeran and Kathryn Townsend Griffin, who was a plaintiff in the copyright infringement case, embraced and had a lengthy conversation.
Griffin, whose father co-wrote the Gaye classic, expressed her satisfaction at being able to resolve the matter through a hug and added that Sheeran had extended an invitation to one of his upcoming concerts.
She further stated that she respected the jury’s decision and had only been fighting for her father’s intellectual property rights, and not for monetary gain, but for principles.
Ed Sheeran, the singer, expressed his satisfaction with the verdict of the case but conveyed his frustration at the fact that baseless accusations like this are permitted to be taken to court.
According to him, musicians must have creative freedom without the fear of being accused of stealing other songs. In this case, his team demonstrated that the chord progression in question from Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” had been used in songs before it was written and would continue to be used in creating music after all of them are gone.
The plaintiffs had cited similarities between the chord progression, harmonic rhythm, and specific melodies in “Let’s Get It On” and Sheeran’s hit “Thinking Out Loud.”
Sheeran refuted these as “misleading comparisons” and stated that he was glad the jury saw through the bogus claim.
He further stated that it was unjust and that by stopping this practice, they could properly support genuine music copyright claims, ensuring that legitimate claims are heard and resolved rightfully.
The case involving Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” and the classic Marvin Gaye song “Let’s Get It On” presented conflicting narratives to the jury regarding whether there were basic similarities or if it was a copy-cat act.
The plaintiffs claimed that the chord progression, harmonic rhythm, and some melodies in both songs were alike.
However, Sheeran’s legal team countered that the melodies were distinct and that the elements utilized in both songs are typical in pop music. Ultimately, the jury concluded that Sheeran had created “Thinking Out Loud” independently and did not infringe on the copyright of Gaye’s song.
