Former NFL Player JaMarcus Russell Sued Over Misappropriated Donation to High School Football Team

JaMarcus Russell, former NFL quarterback, is being sued for allegedly misappropriating a $74,000 donation meant for his high school football team.

Bollywood Fever: JaMarcus Russell, widely known as one of the biggest NFL Draft busts in history, is now embroiled in a legal battle over a donation intended for his high school football team. Navigator Credit Union is suing Russell for nearly $55,000, plus interest, attorney’s fees, and other costs.

The lawsuit, filed in Mobile County, Alabama, alleges that Russell cashed a $74,000 check meant as a donation to Williamson High School for new weight training equipment. The credit union claims the money was lent to Russell at his request, but the football program never received the funds.

WKRG reports that the $55,000 in question was mistakenly given to Russell on the day he cashed the check. The check was written by Chris Knowles from his business, Selwonk Enterprises. Knowles allegedly stopped payment on the check when Russell failed to provide proof of the donation and stopped returning his calls.

Russell, who served as a volunteer assistant football coach at Williamson from 2018 until last fall, has filed a counterclaim against Knowles for stopping payment on the check. Russell admitted to cashing the check but denies any wrongdoing.

The case is set to go to trial in October.

Russell, a former Heisman Trophy winner, was the No. 1 overall pick by the Oakland Raiders in the 2007 NFL Draft. After three disappointing seasons, he was released and never played in the NFL again.
