Jean Smart hosts the premiere of “Saturday Night Live” Season 50, delivering a witty monologue, celebrating New York, and poking fun at her recent Emmy win. Maya Rudolph returns as Kamala Harris.
BollywoodFever: Jean Smart made a dazzling entrance as the host of the Saturday Night Live Season 50 premiere, celebrating the milestone in her own unique, humorous style. Decked out in a sparkly pink pantsuit, the Hacks star expressed her excitement: “I can’t tell you how honored I am to be hosting the premiere episode of Season 50. It truly is incredible to be here.” Smart, fresh off her Emmy win, quipped, “I haven’t gotten all dressed up and had hundreds of people clap for me in days.”
Reflecting on her decades-long career, Smart reminisced about watching SNL from its very first episode and how she always knew she’d host the show someday. “And this was the first Saturday that worked for my schedule,” she joked. She then broke into a lighthearted song, poking fun at New York City’s changing seasons, complete with her witty observation, “I love autumn in New York… the color of trash bags changing.”
In her monologue, Smart also took playful jabs at the city and praised her popularity among lesbians, a nod to her iconic roles over the years. “Lesbians are obsessed with me,” she mused, much to the audience’s delight.
Not even two weeks ago, Smart secured her third Emmy for lead actress in a comedy for Hacks, making it her sixth overall Emmy win. In her acceptance speech, she joked, “It’s very humbling, it really is. And I appreciate this because I just don’t get enough attention. I’m serious.”
Maya Rudolph Returns as Kamala Harris in Cold Open
Before Smart’s monologue, SNL kicked off the 50th season with a cold open featuring Maya Rudolph’s return as Vice President Kamala Harris. The sketch introduced Jim Gaffigan as her running mate, Tim Walz, and Andy Samberg as her husband, Doug Emhoff.
Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC and streams on Peacock. The show will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a live primetime special on February 16, 2024.
