In an Instagram statement, Jameela Jamil expressed her support for award shows implementing gender-neutral categories. She proposed the creation of a distinct category for individuals who identify as non-binary, emphasizing the importance of not “completely shutting out women.”

Jamil highlighted the disproportionate number of male winners at award shows and suggested that providing a separate category for non-binary talent would be a positive step towards inclusion.

Acknowledging the growing presence of non-binary talent in the industry, Jamil emphasized the need to expand award show structures without unintentionally erasing any gender identities.

As an audience member, she stated her impartial stance, noting that she would not personally be eligible for an Oscar nomination. Jamil concluded by affirming her advocacy for inclusive changes in the award show landscape.

Jameela Jamil, known for her role in “The She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” clarified her stance on Instagram, addressing the Oscars’ potential elimination of gendered acting awards. She highlighted the rarity of women being nominated and winning in categories like Best Director, which are already genderless.

Expressing her desire to create more opportunities and inclusivity, Jamil emphasized the importance of not narrowing down opportunities for everyone, including gender non-conforming (GNC) individuals. She noted that award shows like the Independent Spirit Awards, British Independent Film Awards, MTV VMAs, and Film & TV Awards have already embraced gender-neutral categories.

Jamil acknowledged the existing disparity and anticipated a growing frustration among women who are excluded from award opportunities due to limited spots for winners. Instead of minimizing the chances for both women and non-binary (NB) individuals, she advocated for expanding possibilities in an industry that has historically struggled to treat others equally to men.

She concluded by affirming the need to address the inequality and ensure a fair shot for both GNC individuals and women in the entertainment industry.
