“Oppenheimer” is an extraordinary 2023 epic biographical thriller film, masterfully written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Drawing inspiration from the 2005 biography “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the movie chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant theoretical physicist who played a pivotal role in the development of the first nuclear weapons during the Manhattan Project, thus marking the dawn of the Atomic Age.

As the main cast members signed on between November 2021 and April 2022, the film’s pre-production commenced swiftly. Under the skilled eye of cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, filming began in January 2022 and wrapped up in May of the same year. Nolan’s trademark practical effects and minimal use of computer-generated imagery create a visually immersive experience, filmed in a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film, including groundbreaking sections in IMAX black-and-white analog photography.

The film’s post-production saw the expertise of editor Jennifer Lame and the mesmerizing score composed by Ludwig Göransson, with additional visual effects provided by DNEG.

“Oppenheimer” premiered at Le Grand Rex in Paris on July 11, 2023, and is set for a highly anticipated theatrical release in the United Kingdom and the United States on July 21, 2023, courtesy of Universal Pictures. Remarkably, this is the first film from Nolan not to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures domestically or internationally since “Memento” in 2000, and it also marks his return to an R rating since “Insomnia” in 2002.
