PM Modi Reiterates India’s Commitment to Development Over Expansionism in Brunei Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasizes India’s development-focused policy and support for international maritime laws during his visit to Brunei, avoiding direct mention of China.
Bollywood Fever: During a visit to Brunei on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s stance on prioritizing development over expansionism, without naming any specific country.
The comment comes amidst strained relations between India and China, particularly following a deadly border clash in 2020.
Brunei, located near the South China Sea—a region predominantly claimed by Beijing—was the backdrop for Modi’s statement.
He also stressed India’s support for freedom of navigation and overflight under international law, citing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which governs maritime rights and global resource use.
