French President Emmanuel Macron discusses alternative security measures for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony, including potential venue changes to ensure safety amid terrorism threats. This follows recent increased security at major sporting events in Paris.
French President Emmanuel Macron has detailed contingency plans for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony in the event of a terrorism threat. During a Monday interview with CNN affiliate BFMTV at The Grand Palais, one of the Olympic venues, Macron emphasized the readiness to implement alternative security strategies.
“If we think there are security risks, we’ll have plan B, and even plan C,” Macron stated. He outlined potential adjustments, including “restricting the ceremony to the Paris Trocadero square facing the Eiffel Tower” or relocating it to the Stade de France stadium.
Additionally, Macron noted that a security perimeter would be established around the ceremony site well in advance, ranging from days to weeks before the event begins.
This announcement comes after French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, earlier in March, declared that the ceremony’s attendance capacity would be significantly reduced for security reasons. Originally projected to host some 600,000 attendees, the event will now see 104,000 people in stands along the Seine river, with another 220,000 on adjacent raised roadways over a six-kilometer stretch.
The security concerns are underscored by recent events in Paris, including last week’s increased security measures during the Champions League quarterfinal match between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona. This response followed a threat from the Islamic State terror group targeting the Parc des Princes and other European soccer stadiums.
