Harley Reid, despite having only six AFL games under his belt, has shown such remarkable talent that West Coast is considering offering him a contract exceeding $1 million per season. The No. 1 draft pick has dazzled fans and critics alike by kicking goals, taking spectacular catches, and displaying a level of skill reminiscent of Dustin Martin, especially in breaking from packs.

Reid’s dynamic performances have contributed significantly to West Coast’s recent success, including back-to-back victories that have improved their standing to 14th on the ladder. His notable performance in a recent 37-point derby victory over Fremantle included three goals and 19 disposals, fueling speculation about his potential to earn a million-dollar salary in his upcoming contract.

Currently, Reid is playing under a rookie contract set to expire at the end of 2026, with an extension possible that could see a substantial salary increase starting in 2027. His initial contract as a first-round draftee, which includes a base salary and match payments, also offers incentives for various achievements.

Ryan Daniels from Seven’s Perth bureau suggested, “I’m told the market will dictate value in excess of $1 million a year for Reid.” Meanwhile, former AFL player Nathan Brown praised Reid on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show: “I don’t think that since Chris Judd that somebody has had such an impact so early. We heard he was a once-in-a-generation player and we’re seeing that in front of our eyes. They needed a leader to get behind.”

Kane Cornes also acknowledged Reid’s unique abilities and his positive influence despite the intense media spotlight. Although Reid narrowly missed out on the Ross Glendinning Medal in the win against Fremantle, his post-game interaction with Fremantle legend David Mundy, where he joked about receiving only one vote, highlighted his engaging personality.

Looking ahead, West Coast is considering a significant contract offer to ensure Reid remains with them long-term, potentially up to $2 million per year. This is reflective of a broader trend in the AFL, where top talents might command such salaries as the salary cap increases.

Leigh Matthews spoke on Nine’s Footy Furnace about the potential for a player to earn up to $2 million, indicating that someone of Reid’s caliber might justify such an investment. However, Jimmy Bartel voiced caution, emphasizing the importance of balanced team investment.

As Reid continues to impress on the field and express satisfaction with his AFL journey, West Coast’s management, including new CEO Don Pyke, is keenly aware of the strategic importance of securing his talents for the future.
