Israeli Military Intelligence Chief Resigns After Hamas Attack Breaches Defenses

News

On Monday, the Israeli military announced that Aharon Haliva, the head of its intelligence corps, has resigned.

This resignation comes in the wake of the severe failures associated with the unexpected Oct. 7 attack by Hamas, which breached Israel’s highly regarded defense systems.

This incident, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people, predominantly civilians, and saw approximately 250 individuals taken captive, led to a protracted six-month conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Haliva acknowledged his responsibility for the oversight shortly after the attack, stating that he bore the blame for not averting the incident.

Following his resignation, the military chief of staff formally accepted his resignation and expressed gratitude for his service.

This development may prompt further resignations among Israel’s senior security officials, as they potentially face accountability for the intelligence failures that allowed the attack to occur.
