Shogun Director Rejects Game of Thrones Comparisons, Prefers Succession and House of Cards Analogies

Bollywoodfever, March 5: Jonathan van Tulleken, the director of the new “Shogun” series, is distancing his project from “Game of Thrones” comparisons, suggesting that “House of Cards” and “Succession” are more apt references for the mini-series.

The adaptation of James Clavell’s acclaimed historical novel, which tells the story of John Blackthorne’s (played by Cosmo Jarvis) rise to power in Japan, is the second high-budget rendition following the 1980 Richard Chamberlain mini-series.

The narrative, inspired by the real-life adventures of William Adams in Japan, is currently available for streaming in the US on Hulu and FX (and Disney+ in the UK).

Despite early comparisons to “Game of Thrones,” van Tulleken emphasizes the series’ focus on character-driven intrigue and political machinations, likening it to the complex interpersonal and power dynamics seen in “Succession” and “House of Cards.”

Van Tulleken highlights the series’ exploration of cultural encounters and mutual perceptions between the West and Japan, aiming to transcend the traditional Western gaze with a sophisticated portrayal of political intrigue, imprisonment, and entrapment. The director’s vision for “Shogun” aligns with contemporary audience desires for nuanced storytelling, moving beyond the spectacle of violence to delve into the dangers of dialogue and power plays.

Since its debut, “Shogun” has received critical acclaim, boasting a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Van Tulleken’s approach to “Shogun” seeks to redefine expectations for historical dramas, offering a narrative rich in complexity and relevance to modern themes of power and identity.
