Sweeney Rebukes Carol Baum’s Acting Critique: ‘That’s Shameful’

Sydney Sweeney has responded through her representative to Carol Baum’s critical comments on her acting.

During a screening of the 1988 movie “Dead Ringers,” film producer Carol Baum took a jab at Sweeney’s performance in the romantic comedy “Anyone But You” while conversing with New York Times critic Janet Maslin. Baum, who is also a professor, questioned Sweeney’s appeal during a Q&A at the Jacob Burns Film Center on April 11, as reported by the Daily Mail. “I watched this unwatchable movie — sorry to people who love this movie — (this) romantic comedy where they hate each other,” Baum said, reflecting on her attempt to understand Sweeney’s rising fame.

“Anyone But You,” featuring Sweeney and Glen Powell as former partners who cross paths at a wedding in Australia, was a significant success, earning $218.8 million globally since its release in December 2023.

Baum’s blunt critique extended to her classroom discussions. “I said to my class, ‘Explain this girl to me,’” she stated. “She’s not pretty. She can’t act. Why is she so hot?”

Sweeney’s team has since condemned Baum’s comments. “How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman,” Sweeney’s representative told USA TODAY. “If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that’s shameful.”

While Baum has shown remorse for her words according to TMZ, Janet Maslin clarified in a subsequent post that their mention of “Anyone But You” was to highlight its success in a flagging genre, not to belittle Sweeney.

Teddy Schwarzman, who has produced a film with Sweeney, also stepped in to defend her. “I’ll enlighten Ms. Baum that two-time Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney is not only one of the most talented actresses I’ve worked with, but also incredibly smart, kind and humble,” he posted on social media. “I’m not sure why someone who claims to still be a producer would make such terribly ugly comments, but I can assure everyone that Sydney is at least beautiful on the inside.”

Sweeney, whose credits include co-producing and starring in the psychological horror film “Immaculate” released in March, which grossed $21.3 million worldwide, continues to make strides in her acting career.
