BollywoodFever: Alex Salmond, the former First Minister of Scotland, tragically passed away last week at the age of 69 from a suspected heart attack while attending a conference in North Macedonia.
The news of his sudden death has sent shockwaves through the political landscape in the UK, with figures including the Prime Minister and the King issuing public statements in his memory.
According to witnesses, Salmond collapsed unexpectedly while eating lunch at the conference. Mark Donfried, director of the Academy for Cultural Diplomacy, who was present at the time, recounted the moment Salmond was helping Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh, chair of the Alba Party, to open a ketchup bottle when he suddenly fell back in his chair.
Donfried explained in an interview with Times Radio that Salmond’s collapse was “totally out of the blue” and without warning.
He noted that a former executive of the Cyprus stock exchange, who was sitting next to Salmond, immediately took him in his arms and realized that he was unconscious. Efforts to revive Salmond were unsuccessful, as paramedics attempted resuscitation for 30 minutes before declaring him dead.
The North Macedonian interior ministry confirmed that Salmond passed away at 3.30pm local time (2.30pm BST). A post-mortem later confirmed that the cause of death was a heart attack.
Salmond’s death has left the Alba Party and the wider political community in mourning, marking the end of a significant chapter in Scottish politics.
