Interest in Caitlin Clark continues to surge across the country as evidenced by Monday night’s WNBA Draft, where the Iowa standout was the center of attention. The draft has been confirmed as the most-watched in its history.
ESPN revealed on Tuesday that 2.45 million viewers witnessed the Indiana Fever select Clark as the No. 1 overall pick, shattering the previous record of 601,000 viewers set in 2004. At its peak, the broadcast attracted 3.09 million viewers.
The draft, which also showcased talents like Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, ranked as Monday night’s most-watched program among individuals under 35 years old, according to the network.
Additionally, the preceding show, “WNBA Countdown,” also experienced its highest viewership numbers to date, as reported by ESPN.
This surge in viewership isn’t unexpected given Clark’s immense popularity from her time with the Hawkeyes. Her performances in this year’s NCAA tournament set viewership records, and the Fever are reportedly seeing a significant increase in demand for her jerseys and game tickets.
Clark is set to make her WNBA debut on May 14. Based on the recent trends, it’s expected that her first game will draw a large television audience.
