Shakira Opens Up About Healing and Freedom Through Music on ‘The Tonight Show

Shakira is embracing her newfound single status with open arms!

During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, the Colombian superstar shared insights into her personal life, particularly her separation from Gerard Piqué, and how it reignited her passion for music.

Discussing her latest album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran — her first in seven years — Shakira revealed, “I’ve been putting out music here and there but it was really hard for me to put together a body of work.”

Following her split from Piqué in 2022 after a decade plus one year, amidst rumors of his infidelity, Shakira, a mother to Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, has transitioned from their shared life in Barcelona to a new beginning in Miami. The couple, though never married, had made a life together in the city where Piqué played for FC Barcelona.

Shakira humorously noted her newfound freedom, saying, “I didn’t have time. It was the husband-factor. Now I’m husband-less… Yeah, the husband was dragging me down. Now I’m free. Now I can actually work.

On the topic of her album’s message, Shakira stated, “It’s men’s turn now. For too long we have been sent to cry with a script in our hands and without an end just because we are women.” She emphasized the importance of women healing on their own terms, away from societal expectations.

Creating the album was a therapeutic yet challenging journey for Shakira, who admitted, “I was raw… I was dealing with a lot of stuff. I felt at times with a knife between my teeth.” Despite the hardships, music served as a healing force, helping her “rebuild myself.”

Shakira transformed her “pain and anger and frustration” into “creativity, productivity, strength and resilience,” finding a metaphor in precious stones for the album’s vinyl covers to symbolize women’s resilience in the face of adversity.

The album features eight new tracks, a remix, and seven hit singles, including “Music Sessions Vol. 53” with Bizarrap — a pointed track post-breakup with Piqué — and collaborations with Karol G, Ozuna, Rauw Alejandro, Manuel Turizo, and a new song with Cardi B titled “Puntería.”

Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran is available now, marking a pivotal moment in Shakira’s career and personal growth.
