Plymouth took the lead early, with striker Michael Obafemi finding the net in the first 15 minutes. However, the match took a turn in the 86th minute when Blackburn’s Joe Rankin-Costello scored a controversial equalizer, sparking outrage on the Plymouth bench. Argyle players and staff, including Rooney, argued the goal should have been disallowed due to a foul in the build-up.

Rooney, seething with frustration, made his protests clear to fourth official Jacob Miles, leading referee James Linington to show him a red card, sending the Manchester United legend to the stands. Despite his dismissal, Rooney didn’t miss the final moment of glory for his team, as Morgan Whittaker scored a dramatic injury-time winner to claim all three points.

Rooney returned to the pitch after the final whistle to celebrate with his players, marking Plymouth’s third win in five league games. This result moved them up to 14th in the Championship table.

Rooney is determined to rebuild his managerial career after being sacked by Birmingham City in January, following a short 15-game tenure. He previously managed DC United in the USA and Derby County before taking charge at Plymouth.
