JJ Peterka and the Buffalo Sabres are keeping their playoff hopes alive, tightening the race in the NHL with a decisive 6-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night.

Peterka led the charge with two goals, including a pivotal go-ahead score, as the Sabres not only dampened the Capitals’ playoff aspirations but also positioned themselves as contenders in the tight Eastern Conference playoff scene.

With just two weeks remaining in the season, only five points now separate the eighth-placed Capitals from the Sabres, who are in 12th place.

Rasmus Dahlin, Tage Thompson, and Alex Tuch each contributed a goal and two assists, with the Sabres breaking the game wide open by netting three goals within a 2:30 timeframe early in the third period.

Goalkeeper Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made a strong comeback after conceding a goal from Martin Fehervary’s 40-foot shot on the first attempt, finishing the game with 23 saves. A key to Buffalo’s success was overcoming an early deficit, improving their record to 14-27-4 when allowing the first goal.

Dahlin emphasized resilience and teamwork, saying, “Just stay with it. We had a lot of chances throughout the whole game, and guys were scoring today, so it was an overall good game from us. They scored early, but we battled through that and came back strong.”
