Phil Kessel Eyeing NHL Comeback, Potential Fit with Columbus Blue Jackets

Three-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Kessel is seeking an NHL return after sitting out the 2023–24 season, with the Columbus Blue Jackets emerging as a possible destination.

BollywoodFever: Former three-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Kessel is eyeing an NHL comeback after sitting out the entire 2023–24 season. According to reports and recent speculation, the veteran forward may have an opportunity to return to the league, potentially with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

On the 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman suggested that Kessel could be a good fit for the Blue Jackets. The franchise recently signed veteran forward James van Riemsdyk and is looking to bolster its forward group after a disappointing 2023–24 campaign.

“Honestly, I wonder if there’s any chance that Phil Kessel may end up there,” Friedman said on the September 16 episode. “This is a serious season for Columbus. They were disappointed last year. They want to show some improvement. I kind of wonder about a guy like Kessel because he’s got the reputation of lightening the mood and just creating enjoyment when he’s around.”

The Blue Jackets suffered the tragic loss of forward Johnny Gaudreau this summer and still have two forward vacancies to fill, according to general manager Don Waddell. With Kessel’s veteran presence and lighthearted personality, he could provide the spark Columbus needs to bounce back this season.

Kessel, who holds the NHL Ironman record with 1,064 consecutive games played, has scored over 400 career goals and won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins and a third with the Vegas Golden Knights. His desire to return to the league has been confirmed by Friedman on the September 12 episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, where he mentioned Kessel is actively pursuing a contract.

“He wants to play, I’ve heard this,” Friedman said. “He’s been calling teams and really wants to play.”

As Kessel looks to make his NHL comeback, the Blue Jackets could offer the perfect opportunity for the seasoned forward to showcase his skills once again.
