Raheem Morris secures his first home win as Atlanta Falcons head coach in a 26-24 victory over the Saints, powered by defense, special teams, and a clutch field goal from Younghoe Koo.
BollywoodFever: In Raheem Morris’ first home victory as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, the team edged out the New Orleans Saints 26-24 in a dramatic finish. The win, which improved Atlanta’s record to 2-2, came despite the Falcons failing to score an offensive touchdown. Instead, a special teams touchdown, a pick-six, and four field goals from kicker Younghoe Koo, including a career-long 58-yarder with two seconds remaining, carried the Falcons to the crucial NFC South victory.
“It’s a three-phase game, the way I look at it at all times,” Morris told reporters Monday. “But you get a chance to go out and score on defense, you score on special teams, you’re throwing a pool party in your head.”
The Falcons, despite being out-possessed by over 11 minutes and accumulating just 315 total yards, made the most of their opportunities. Morris’ offense showed slight improvement in third-down conversions, going 4-for-11, up from a dismal 22.2% success rate entering Week 4.
“There are always things you want to improve on,” Morris added. “We got a little bit better on third downs (Sunday), just a tick better. I think you have to take it one step at a time when you’re trying to get better in all of those areas.
Looking ahead, the Falcons face a short turnaround as they prepare to host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday. The game marks multiple reunions for Morris, who spent several years as a defensive assistant and head coach for the Buccaneers. He also worked with current Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield during his time as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams.
“I’ve got so much respect for Baker from when we got him in L.A., and he had a chance to come out there and revitalize what he lost, a little bit,” Morris said. I think Baker is going to do whatever he can to win that football game.”
Tampa Bay currently leads the all-time series against Atlanta 31-30 and has won six of the last eight meetings.
